So I’m Fiona and I’m an artist living in the beautiful North East of Scotland. A land of breathtaking coastlines which change dramatically at every turn and brilliantly colourful fields and hills all cushioned against the clearest blue skies…steady, that’s going a bit poetic for my first paragraph isn’t it?

It’s true though, it’s so easy to find views that inspire here. I hope that my work goes some way to capture the energy and beauty of this area.

I’m also going to share some of my portraits and other work alongside some snapshots of my life as we go along…let’s dive in!

Early Career

Aberdeen College of Commerce 1988

After leaving Buckie High school in 1988 I enjoyed a year at Aberdeen College of Commerce building a portfolio for application to art school. In 1989 I started as an undergraduate at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and graduated in Fine Art, Sculpture in 1993.

A fresh faced graduate 1993

Degree Show – rather out of focus pics but in those days we catalogued our work on slides. I used a lot of plaster casting, most of 1993 was spent covered in a fine mist of Plaster of Paris. Some of the ideas that interested me then were incredibly profound but I found it hard to articulate, if I could counsel my younger self I would say leave your doubts and self conscious thoughts to the side and just bullshit like all the others do…

‘Adam and Eve’ Wood carving inspired by German Expressionism – my first exploration into figurative carving. Something I am still delighted by and I think draws me towards lino cuts.

Aberdeen International Youth Festival, artist in residence 1994

I had the pleasure and privilege of being one of the Artist in residence for the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in 1994 and spent 6 weeks working at The Scottish Sculpture Workshop under the watchful eye of Fred Bushe. It is a time in my life that I will always cherish and I was so thankful of the opportunity.
